Mort Henderson was a journeyman wrestler and part-time railroad detective who became the earliest known masked wrestler in the United States. Donning a black mask in 1915, The Masked Marvel was first seen during a tournament at New York's Manhattan Opera House, where he heckled wrestlers from the crowd until the public demanded he compete. The buzz that surrounded this mysterious debut would turn the event from a financial disaster into a major success. Though a ringside reporter eventually unmasked him, Henderson kept drawing crowds until retiring in 1921, selling the Masked Marvel name on to the next man.
